Eureka So, I just started watching Eureka, and (no offense to the f-listers who love it) am none too impressed. Someone please tell me that Carter and Allison discover (soon!) that they really have zero chemistry. I like Zoe and LOVE Stark which is why I'm quitting watching now. (Me, being me, skipped to an interview towards the end of season 3 and found out something which I oughtn't have.) *sigh*
Ah well, back to the search for summer programming.
I also try to read a new book series every summer. Am open to suggestions, fire away.

When I first started watching Eureka I couldn't connect either. I think I watched through episode six and just kind of fizzled with it. I forget what made me pick it up again... probably when Bear McCreary signed on as the show composer for Season 2. Haha.
Anyway, now I really love it. I would disagree with Carter and Allison not having chemistry, but to each her own. As far as ships go, I'm not OTP on any particular pairing in this show.
I'd say try and at least get through Season 1. The seasons aren't all that long, and the last two eps of Season 1 are really, really good. The finale has a scene with Henry that is one of my favorite acting performances, um, ever, so now I'm curious for your professional take on it. ;-) If you're not invested after that, well... not everybody can like everything. Hehe (I've been watching Farscape, and while I genuinely enjoy it, it's not absolutely pwning my soul the way it seems to affect half my flist, so...).
(Ironically, I'm in the middle of rewatching the whole series this week in anticipation of the back half of Season 3 finally airing in July).
Book series... *glances at newly dusted and reorganized bookshelf* Have you read Howl's Moving Castle by Diana Wynne Jones? It has two sequels, though they're not so much serial as they are satisfactory tie-ins, if that makes sense, but all three books are utterly delightful. They're definitely in a prominent position on my "reread" list. Right now I'm working my way through the Percy Jackson books again and after that I'm going to read the 3rd Firebird book (finished up the 2nd on my vacation).
Yeah, I watched through season 1 of Eureka and wasn't thrilled with it. It has its moments, and it's better than Heroes (ha, doesn't take much anymore), but other than that... ehh, I don't feel like I'm missing anything by not continuing.
As for books... the Jason Bourne books are a pretty good read. The Ludlum originals of those are freakishly detailed in their writing. Also far better than the movies (and I like the movies!).
Also, Ender's Game by Orson Scott Card and its parallel, Ender's Shadow. I haven't read any of the other books in the Ender series, but I hear they get pretty analytical and start delving into psychology and stuff. I own some of them, I just haven't read them yet. At a certain point there's too much science in the science fiction. ;) But Game and Shadow are both really fun reads.
I love Eureka, but it's certainly not for everyone. And Stark kicks ass. I'm not sure he's really dead though. It's sci-fi, they may bring him back yet. As for books... you may be sorry you asked. ;) Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum series are lots of fun. If you want non-fiction, try The Sex Lives of Cannibals and Getting Stoned With Savages by J Maarten Troost. For brain candy romance novels, try Joann Ross - especially her Callahan Brothers trilogy, which is available in one volume. Her other books are good too, but that is my favorite series. Rachel Gibson is another one for good brain candy. Her latest, True Love and Other Disasters was very entertaining. And the hero in it is a hot hockey player... and she writes very descriptively. ;) I could probably come up with more, but that should give you a good place to start. ;) |
