Publication progress on the horizon.
OakTara, the company who contracted Faith's and my first two books, has an author's forum, where the authors of OakTara keep each other updated on their progress, promotional stuff, who's getting published at the moment, and a whole bunch of random other things. One of the authors finally got a message from Ramona (the head editor at the publishing company), and Ramona asked her to pass it along to the rest of the authors. It's very encouraging. Basically, OakTara has spent the most of the past year republishing 79 books, because last year they had to change their name from Capstone Fiction to OakTara Fiction.

So one of the authors posted this message: "Ramona asked me to pass this along: Between now and early January, Ramona is focusing on getting books to the printer. Then she'll be reading and contracting new manuscripts after the first of the year, as well as catching up on additional contracted books that have been waiting in line, due to spending 9 of the last 12 months republishing 79 previous Capstone editions into OakTara editions. OakTara has now published over 123 titles (79 of them twice!), a significant achievement for a publishing house launched less than 3 years ago, especially when bigger longer-established houses have frozen fiction acquisitions and laid off staff, and well-known lines such as Avon Inspire are producing only 7 or so novels a year. You'll note many new titles popping up on the www.oaktara.com website, so keep your eye on that, and spread the word. The more people know about the OakTara line of books, the more will know about your book when it is published. OakTara is juggling publishing new-to-the-scene authors, second and subsequent books in series for OakTara authors, as well as books by more established-in-the-market authors that will help draw attention to the OakTara line of books (and thus help to increase marketing visibility and sales for all authors), so thanks for your patience. No one's book has been forgotten; the OakTara staff are working continuously to publish your contracted book as soon as possible, as well as to read the manuscripts they've received. For those of you who haven't heard yet from Ramona, she'll be in touch with you in January re:scheduling of your book."

Which is EXCITING, because it means that Faith and I should actually at least hear in January about when our book is scheduled on her list to be edited and whatnot. If they're going to be able to finally start reading and contracting new novels, then it seems that they're finally getting back on track after having to republish so many old titles. :D

ETA: I also saw that on the author's forums, two of the authors that Faith and I have been in communication with got emails from Ramona today--they're going through the editing process right now so that their books can be sent to print before the holidays. Since we only talk to a fraction of the authors, we have no way of knowing how many others have also begun the editing process this month. Not all of the OakTara authors are active on the forums.

So much to do...
Including today (which is over 1/4 over already) I have basically 10 work days left in which to accomplish a small hill of things before year end, which will probably turn into a mountain before too long, as I understand everyone will be pushing work onto everybody else in anticipation of the coming change of the calendar. I love Christmas, but from a business perspective it is most inconveniently situated on said calendar.

I am also distracted this morning because I'm just about halfway through [info]grav_ity's Nano novel and still pretty well sucked in. And I have a general question for the fantasy-loving flist: what the heck is it about theives in adventure and fantasy stories that makes them so romantic? I mean, we're all of the basic consensus, aren't we, that theivery is a bad thing, right? (Kate, what you may read between the lines of this brief commentary is that I find your Thief very hot, even though I'm kind of vague on how old he's supposed to be) ;-)

I got almost all my Christmas presents wrapped on Saturday night. The only exceptions are Aaron's (which I don't have yet) and Kathryn's (which is a book my mom borrowed to read before then). I also finished all my small mending jobs that have build up over the past few months, and got 2/3 of Pride and Prejudice "watched" (read: listend to) in the process of accomplishing both tasks. The presents make our shiny new Christmas tree look much less lonely. This is the first year we've ever had a family tree, so I thought I would lavish it with much love.

Finally, my car is in the shop this morning, getting new tires. I didn't want to pay the money, but after two small episodes of fish-tailing when the real snow and ice hasn't even begun yet, I wised up and remembered that a little bit longer getting my credit card paid down is a small price to pay in exchange for my life. One nice thing, the local Goodyear stores offer shuttle service back and forth to headquarters for GY employees, which is why I can get it done on a Monday. :-)

My editing project is going along swimmingly. (What does that even mean?) But as I said to [info]sache8 the other day, after a month of writingwritingwriting, the idea of cutting is foreign and slightly scary. ;)

Basically, though, this draft isn't nearly as scary as I was anticipating.

"It's a bit like a subplot, except that I don't care at all." Some Twilight LOLZ.
So, for those of you who've never read Twilight but want to learn what happens chapter by chapter without reading it and while having a cute British boy rip apart the plot and grammar as he surmises it, Watch this. It's full of LOLZ. He likes yelling at Bella.

If I didn't have a nasty headache, I might reflect here on how editing yourself is an exercise in self-reflection, but instead I'm just going to giggle about me screwing up another character's name and foolishly relying on West Wing for realism.

It's probably about time for an update

Since, you know, we haven't posted one in four months. O_o

Truthfully, there really hasn't been much to update. We're still waiting in line at the publishing company. I think that's just one of the trickiest parts of publication: there is oftentimes a long wait. That's okay, though, because Faith and I have been keeping busy. We both just participated in NaNoWriMo. That is, National Novel Writing Month. The goal is to write a 50,000 word novel in one month, and I'm happy to say that Faith and I both met our goal. We used NaNo in 2008 to write the third book in the Restoration series, but this year, we used it to work on our own individual novels. It was an insane, caffeine-filled (at least on my part), giddy, wild ride, but it was so worth it. Right now, I think we're both still resting and recovering from a month of frantic writing. Faith wrote over 84,000 words for her novel, and mine came in at around 70,000.

We had started book four before NaNoWriMo, but we decided to hold off on finishing it until early next year, because this fall has just been so busy.

On another Restoration series related note, Faith was in search of an artist to begin some artwork that we could use for promotional purposes, and we are thrilled that Jacob Grant, an author with our publishing company, has agreed to work with us on that.

As always, we'll be sure to let everyone know when this book finally gets rolling at OakTara! :)

Books!!! (And to-do lists)
Okay, Laura, I finished your book last night and I loved it. We'll talk more later. Kate, I just now started your book on lunch break and I'm already sucked in: mind, body, and spirit. Tearing myself away to return to work (especially) on a Friday, is difficult indeed. Fortunately, I have crucial, time-sensitive tasks to do that will help me with that.

Tonight I need to:

-- Write up a first-draft contract with our illustrator and send it.
-- Finish typing up S5 DS9 reactions and post.
-- Finish Christmas card list and start filling them out.
-- Receipts and bills for the week.
-- Probably watch DS9.
-- Read! And stay up as late as I want doing it!

Tomorrow I need to:

-- Sleep in, but wake up with enough time to go to the post office.
-- Go to the post office, get stamps for Christmas Cards.
-- Grocery shopping; Get stuff to make lasagna sometime next week.
-- Make an appointment with Goodyear to get new tires before the end of the month.
-- Make an appointment to get an oil change and tune-up on my car.
-- Get my hair dyed.
-- Continue writing Christmas cards.
-- Possibly finish up my Christmas shopping (I only need gifts for my brother, my brother-in-law, and my niece). [All done except for bro-in-law]
-- Email Jana and Laura from my American friends I met in Chile to discuss stuff to do next weekend when we're not attending Ashton's wedding together.
-- Mend my coat, my gray skirt, and put a button back on my pink office shirt.
-- Get my sweaters down from the crawlspace above the house.
-- Watch DS9 and read! :-)

You know, supposedly Stephenie Meyer had a dream about a sparkly vampire and wrote it down and made lots of money.

Why won't my characters do that? I'd settle for them just telling me what they're going to do and then I'd make up the language on my own. I think that's more than fair.

Randomocity.
I've been working my way in small spurts the last two days through [info]laura_josephsen's Nano novel. There's something about characters with really cool names. At any rate, I'm enjoying it a lot. And it's also got for me this weird connection with... Taylor Swift.

I have to admit, this girl has grown on me. And I won't deny it was the surge of pity and fascinated horror at watching her be upstaged on live television in front of billions of people and how gracefully she's coasted through it. Before I just kind of lumped her in with the other teeny-bopper pop stars. Sadly, her songs have been slaughtered to death with overplay, but thinking back on how many of them I already know, I have to say, she's got the makings of a truly creative songwriter ("Teardrops on my Guitar" was a little much for me, but the rest of them I've either liked or at least been willing to tolerate). And her voice is lovely and unassuming.

Her latest song, though, "Fifteen" getting airtime has tipped the scales for me from grudging acknowledgement of potential to genuine admiration. It's a wonderful song, with such a strong, sad story, but also hopeful, with a message that is both relevant and recognizable. Because, yes: when you're fifteen and somebody tells you they love you, you're going to believe it. I'm grateful every day that God kept a legion of angels around me when I was that young and impressionable. I really can't claim any rock solid virtue of premature wisdom or saavy. I'm a dreamer and a romantic. Only He can know what might have happened.

Admittedly, it's not to say that every young girl's romanticism leads to the kind of heartache that befalls the "Abigail" of the song, but I have seen the trend of starry-eyed naivety enough times in my life (to varying degrees) to know that I can safely label the song's message as relevant. It doesn't describe all of us (all of you, my fellow women who were once girls) by any means, but it does describe enough. Definitely enough.

A good song, Ms. Swift. I hope that somewhere out there it gives someone pause to think, that it's more than just bubbly white noise on the dial.

(Taylor Swift also won me over with her thoroughly enjoyable turn on SNL, as I've already mentioned once. And the connection with Laura's book is a rather eery parallel between the song and one of her main characters' journeys. Purely coincidental, I might add).

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XYtnDrFpBTU Here's the music video. Somebody needs to tell that girl to stand up straight!

Dear Icon-making friends.
I want a Twilight icon.

Okay, so for those of you who are still reading past that line, I want an icon of Aro looking giddy/happy (all of his promos are "I r serious sparkly vampire"), with the text of something like "Glittery and FABULOUS." With maybe a rainbow coloration on the FABULOUS.
